Joyce Maynard

"Before I had children I always wondered whether their births would be... the ultimate in gym class failures. I discovered instead that I'd finally found my sport"

WHAT IS A DOULA?

In western birth culture, we've created a need for a birth "point guard" for birthing mothers and their families. Doulas help you score your ideal birth by demystifying the process of birth through education, presenting all available options, translating intimidating medical terms, and providing unbiased emotional support during labor and post partum for mom and her loved ones.

The statistics surrounding doula support during labor are impressive. Studies have shown that having a doula as a part the birth team:

    *decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%

    * the length of labor by 25%

    * the use of oxytocin by 40%

    *requests for an epidural by 60%

                                                      (americanpregnancy.org)

Other benefits include:

    * A more knowledgeable and involved Partner during the birth process thanks to doula prompts.

    * Increased maternal sense of satisfaction with birth experience.

    * Easier transition into motherhood.

My two cents:

 I am not a sporty woman. Not even close. My hope is that with the attempted sports jargon the corners of your lips turned up a tiny bit. As your doula, I'll always be after your smile, because a sense of humor is the only way to navigate the miraculous hugeness of birth..

 Anyhoo:

I like Joyce Maynard's quote because it seems to sum up two distinct realities of birth. The first is the humility with which we as mothers approach birthing, especially the first time.  And the second is the overwhelming sense of accomplishment we feel having come out on the other side feeling nurtured, revered and heard. It becomes just another BOSS thing your feminine strength allowed you to conquer. And you move to your next horizon of motherhood with BOSS LADY humility.

To me, a doula's role is to facilitate the right tools and environment needed for the final outcome of a mother FEELING nurtured, revered and heard. Simply that and nothing more. What each woman needs to FEEL nurtured, revered and heard during her birthing process is snowflake unique. Every woman deserves a birth team that will deliver her needs.
