My Birth Art

These blog posts have been a bit heavy, so I’m happy to lighten things up a bit to talk about my birth art! Every doula has offerings that make her special, whether she or he has become a trained masseuse, hypnotherapist, or lactation consultant. My “super power on the side” is ART! I have an obsession with drawing on things – paper, walls, clothes, people, you name it – so I figured I should put it to use.

As you have probably guessed by now, I find everything related to procreation pretty spectacular. I’m the person who runs toward the placenta instead of away and cracks up when you pass gas in your birth tub between contractions. Nothing is taboo or too gross for me, as long as it’s linked to birth. Since I draw and sculpt, I’ve decided to capture whichever of the iconic parts of your birth experience you choose, even if it’s the moment everyone’s mood lifted because of your tushy releasing air in a hilarious way. No one has to know why everyone is grinning in that photo I use, and I promise I won’t tell anyone either. Usually that special image is when baby’s head is crowning and mom shines with womanly strength and splendor; or when dad locks eyes with his baby for the first time. I’m happy to make memorable moments iconic in either two or three dimensional form.

I was inspired to merge my adoration of birthing mamas with my need to draw on stuff by the birth photographers in my life. They bring so much joy and meaning to a family’s sacred experience by capturing it from their unique artistic perspective. I believe art distills and transmutes the essence of life into an exquisite other language that makes a gift of it all. Birth is one of the highest facets of life and is the most fitting to be translated into to something even more profound.

Much Love Always,
